Home security is just one facet of preparedness, and it is an essential aspect of being a responsible homeowner. With the increasing rates of crime and burglary in many areas, it has become imperative to take measures to ensure the safety and security of your home and family. Your home is your safe haven and your sanctuary -- there are so many simple and small ways to secure your home. Let's cover some essential tips for home security preparedness. Remember, home security will look different for every family and every home.

Consider a Security System
One of the most effective ways to protect your home is to install a security system. A security system can include cameras, motion detectors, and alarms that will alert you, emergency contacts, and the authorities in case of a break-in or home emergency. There are so many available options - with varying features, price points and capabilities. Even if you're currently renting, there are security options available for you. Some families enjoy smart-home features, where you can remotely lock your doors if you occasionally forget, or check on the family pet via wifi camera while you're running an errand. Make sure to choose a system that is reliable and has monitoring services so that you can be sure that your home is always protected.
Reinforce Entry Points
Another important aspect of home security preparedness is to reinforce the entry points to your home. In my early twenties, it felt like I was moving into a new apartment every year while living in the Bay Area, trying to chase a reasonable rent price. The first thing I did at each new address was reinforce all known entry points. This included front doors, windows, sliding glass doors, garages and even the tiny bathroom windows. Consider installing deadbolts, security screens, window locks, or even a wooden dowel for the sliding glass door. It is also important to ensure that all entry points are always locked, even when you are at home. One easy way to reinforce your front entry, whether you own or rent, is to replace the short 1/2 inch screws that secure the strike plate with longer 3 inch screws. Factory screws barely clear the frame while longer screws secure into the stud. Sometimes there's the false sense of security within the walls of our home - we forget how easy it would be for someone to gain entry if left unsecured.
Keep Your Property Well-Lit
Keeping your property well-lit is an easy (and super effective) way to deter burglars. Criminals don't want to draw any attention, and definitely want to say out of the spotlight - literally. Consider installing motion-activated lights around the perimeter of your home and make sure that all entry points are well-lit at night. This will not only deter burglars but also help you to see any potential threats. There are so many lighting options available - you have a wide variety to chose from. Solar, battery, hard-wired, wifi-enabled, motion sensors - you name it!
Get to Know Your Neighbors
Building a strong community and getting to know your neighbors is critical. Put those overly curious neighbors to good use - kidding! They can help keep an eye on your home when you are away and vice versa. Neighbors can help deter criminals: Criminals are less likely to target a home if they know the neighborhood is vigilant and aware. By building a strong community network and establishing a sense of unity among your neighbors, you can create a culture of watchfulness that can discourage criminals from targeting your area. Neighbors can help identify suspicious activity: Your neighbors may be able to recognize when something is out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. They may notice unfamiliar people or vehicles and can report any suspicious activity to you or the authorities. There is strength in numbers and power in community!
Don't Forget to Develop a Plan
It is important to have a plan in case of an emergency. Develop a plan with your family on what to do in case of a break-in, fire, or natural disaster. Make sure that everyone in the family knows the plan and practice it regularly. Although no one wants to think about such an event, practice drills will help ensure everyone knows where what to do, how to defend, and where to meet (safety rally point). Practice drills are an important time to review safe access to your preferred home defense tools.
As you walk around your home this week, take a moment to review the 5 D's of home safety and security: Deter, Detect, Deny, Delay, Defend.
Deter: This involves taking measures to discourage criminals from targeting your home. Examples include installing visible security cameras, posting warning signs, and using motion-activated lights.
Detect: This involves using alarms and sensors to detect any attempted break-ins. Examples include installing a security system that includes motion sensors, door and window sensors, and glass-break detectors.
Deny: This means making it difficult for criminals to gain entry to your home. Examples include installing high-quality locks, reinforcing doors and windows, and using security film on windows.
Delay: This involves slowing down the progress of criminals and giving law enforcement time to respond. Examples include installing a safe to secure valuables, using deadbolts, and reinforcing doors and windows.
Defend: This involves having a plan in place in case of a break-in or other emergency. Examples include having a designated safe room or safe destination, having a pre-determined escape route, and having a way to contact law enforcement quickly.
